During the drinking session, the bartender shared that the current hotel owner’s lease would soon be up. So, Lee and Lyons decided right then and there that they should take it over. And all it cost them was $39,500. "After finding out that it was £10,000 a year, myself and Mark thought that it would be a brilliant idea to buy it - because we were so drunk,” Lyons told the Mirror. "Now, almost a year on from our drunken idea, we own the hotel and have started doing the hotel up and making it ours."

The Bergensbanen departs Oslo Central Station several times a day. On the voyage—which averages seven hours—the high-altitude railway line roars across the Hardangervidda plateau, passing landscapes more breathtaking than you can imagine. It barrels through green valleys, sparkling lakes, dense forests, snow-capped mountains, gushing waterfalls, winding rivers, dramatic fjords and a total of 180 tunnels before rolling into its terminus. Eight years ago, when I retired, sold almost everything I owned and began traveling the world, I didn’t do it to escape or to separate myself from the things I loved. I did it because I wanted to add some experience and adventure to my life. To move toward being my genuine self, instead of continuing the cookie-cutter life that society had designed for me. However, it didn’t take long to find that moving toward new things in life inevitably moves you away from others. I wanted to share the things I discovered about the world and myself with my old friends, but I found that, because there was no common thread to follow, not many were interested. You met your old friends at a different place and in a different phase of your life. While there still may be affection, your interests and theirs - unless you continue to share common experiences - grow apart. That doesn’t make your new experiences any more valuable than theirs, but it does mean that there is nothing to share or bond over. Nothing in common to discuss. Sure, trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge in China may be exciting for you, but apart from that time you got lost or almost fell, your non-adventure seeking friends just won’t care. They can’t relate.

A Fascinating Short Sea Story SS Warrimoo The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought the master, Captain John Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0º 31′ N and LON 179 30′ W. The date was 31 December 1899. “Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”. Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime. He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ships position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favour. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line! The consequences of this bizarre position were many: The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer. The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter. The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899. In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900. This ship was therefore not only in: Two different days, Two different months, Two different years, Two different seasons But in two different centuries – all at the same time.
