And no one can figure out how it was built in the first place. ----- Satellite images are shedding new light on a mysterious city built on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Explorers first discovered the ruins of Nan Madol nearly 100 years ago, on the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia, the Independent reported. The island is situated about 1,600 miles from Australia, and 2,500 miles from Los Angeles, California. Some locals in Pohnpei refuse to go near the ruins of the city, believing it to be haunted, according to the Independent. Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft even took inspiration from Nan Madol for the fictional, sunken city of R’lyeh in one of his short stories. “Why would somebody build a city out in the middle of the ocean?” archaeologist Patrick Hunt said in a new episode of the “What on Earth?” show on the Science Channel, which discusses the satellite images. “Why here, so far away, from any other known civilization?” The city, which thrived from 1200 to 1700, was built on coral reefs, and is connected via a series of canals. Nan Madol served as a major political and religious city in Polynesia, and some locals call the ruins “Soun Nan-leng,” meaning “Reef of Heaven,” according to the Pohnpei Visitors’ Bureau. The ruins include tombs, baths, and temples. Nan Madol is made up of 92 artificial islands spread across 200 acres, Smithsonian Magazine reported. Some of the walls are 25-feet high, and the total weight of black rocks totals 750,000 metric tons, making it a larger undertaking than the Egyptian pyramids, according to the same report. Without the use of pulleys or other tools, the mystery lingers as to how the city was ever built. “We don’t know how they brought the columns here and we don’t know how they lifted them up to build the walls. Most Pohnpeians are content to believe they used magic to fly them,” an archeologist from Pohnpei told Smithsonian.

Head shops serve as a reminder of the street's hippie heyday, while stalwart Federal mansions remain a link to the area's more distant—and upscale—past. If something has happened in the East Village in the last two centuries, there's a good chance St. Marks Place has played a role. Yet the street has never been a perfect microcosm of the East Village; those mansions were an anomaly, and the hippies were, too. St. Marks is the most famous street in the East Village, but is it a part of the "real" neighborhood at all? The farmland that today comprises St. Marks Place was originally owned by Dutch Director General Peter Stuyvesant, who bought the bouwerij (or "Bowery" as it came to be known) in 1651. Few traces of Stuyvesant's era remain beyond his own grave, which lies in a vault at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery, the Episcopal parish constructed in 1799 on the site of what had once been Stuyvesant's private chapel. The church sits just off Stuyvesant Street, which ran from the Bowery Lane into the heart of the property; it and the Bowery are the only colonial farm roads in the area that survived the implementation of the Commissioners' Plan for the city in 1811.

The island that got rich off bird sh*t is now a total train wreck. Nestled in a cluster of islands in the central Pacific Ocean is Nauru, a small country with a totally insane story. ----- Selling fossilized bird excrement was lucrative business. In the late 60s and 70s, people on Nauru were living large: In 1975, the country earned the equivalent of $2.5 billion — more than enough to satisfy its then population of 7,000 people. With its newfound wealth, people in Nauru bought cars and houses; the country built a hotel, a golf course and founded an airline so it could import Western food. But as the 80s became the 90s, Nauru’s phosphate resources became depleted — and its pile of unpaid bills grew higher. It was around this time that Nauru’s financial strategy took a turn for the weird. Duke Minks, one of the country’s financial advisors, convinced Nauru’s president to invest in a new piece of musical theater. Before embarking on his finance career, Minks served as a roadie for an obscure British pop band called Unit 4 +2. Together with the band’s lead singer, Minks co-wrote and co-produced a show loosely based on the life of Leonardo da Vinci. Perhaps the best way to sum up “Leonardo the Musical: A Portrait of Love” is with this line from The Independent’s review of the show: “Art historians in the audience may have felt queasy midway through Act One when Leonardo da Vinci slapped the Mona Lisa on the bum, and asked her to ‘help me with my research.’” The show closed only a few weeks after its debut in June of 1993, costing the Nauruans approximately $7 million in today’s currency.
