In the heart of Sri Lanka, you'll find one of the world's most scenic train trips. The train from Kandy to Ella is a beautiful 7-hour ride through lush tea plantations, rolling rice fields, and endless mountain views. Incredibly, it's also one of the world's best travel bargains—the entire journey costs just 73 cents. Originally built in 1864 by the colonial British to transport tea from the hills to the capital city, the railway has since become a super affordable way to see the picturesque countryside. Today, the 94-mile train ride is the highlight of any visit to Sri Lanka. One of many unforgettable things about the scenery is the intensity and variety of the color green. Everything here is green and lush, and much of the region is carpeted with the glowing green of the tea plantations. Tea needs a warm climate, altitude and sloping terrain to grow—a perfect description of the Hill Country—and today the region is virtually one big tea plantation.
Paris-based photographer Thomas Jorion has gone out of his way to prove that in Italy, even neglected things can be excessively beautiful. Over the past decade, Jorion has traveled across Italy to document the country's most stunning abandoned buildings. His work—which mainly focuses on spaces from the 18th and 19th century—has culminated in the project Veduta (View).

The World War Two Siege of Malta took place from 1940 to 1942. This tiny island’s prime location meant it was in the spotlight for the war on the Mediterranean. Malta certainly got the raw deal during the war from start to finish. The very day after Mussolini declared war – on June 10, 1940 – Italian bombers commenced attacking the capital of Valletta. Holding the record for heaviest sustained bombing, Malta endured a staggering attack lasting 154 days and nights with a total of 6,700 bombs dropped. Air raids throughout the war over Malta totalled 3,343.
Eight years ago, when I retired, sold almost everything I owned and began traveling the world, I didn’t do it to escape or to separate myself from the things I loved. I did it because I wanted to add some experience and adventure to my life. To move toward being my genuine self, instead of continuing the cookie-cutter life that society had designed for me. However, it didn’t take long to find that moving toward new things in life inevitably moves you away from others. I wanted to share the things I discovered about the world and myself with my old friends, but I found that, because there was no common thread to follow, not many were interested. You met your old friends at a different place and in a different phase of your life. While there still may be affection, your interests and theirs - unless you continue to share common experiences - grow apart. That doesn’t make your new experiences any more valuable than theirs, but it does mean that there is nothing to share or bond over. Nothing in common to discuss. Sure, trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge in China may be exciting for you, but apart from that time you got lost or almost fell, your non-adventure seeking friends just won’t care. They can’t relate.
