In the heart of Sri Lanka, you'll find one of the world's most scenic train trips. The story of how sugar barons controlled the Kingdom, Territory, and State of Hawai‘i in the late nineteenth century and well into the twentieth need not be recounted here. Global competition ultimately brought an end to Hawaiian sugar, and today it continues in a much reduced form only on Maui. Even so, if we look closely, we can still see the influence of sugar, especially in North Kohala. Sugar production needed water, an enormous amount of water. To produce a pound of sugar required up to 500 gallons of water. One million gallons was required every day for even a relatively small 100-acre plantation.

WALK INTO A PATCH OF forest in New England, and chances are you will—almost literally—stumble across a stone wall. Thigh-high, perhaps, it is cobbled together with stones of various shapes and sizes, with splotches of lichen and spongy moss instead of mortar. Most of the stones are what are called “two-handers”—light enough to lift, but not with just one hand. The wall winds down a hill and out of sight. According to Robert Thorson, a landscape geologist at University of Connecticut, these walls are “damn near everywhere” in the forests of rural New England. He estimates that there are more than 100,000 miles of old, disused stone walls out there, or enough to circle the globe four times. Who would build a stone wall, let alone hundreds of thousands of miles of them, in the middle of the forest? No one. The walls weren’t built in the forest but in and around farms. By the middle of the 19th century, New England was over 70 percent deforested by settlers, a rolling landscape of smallholdings as far as the eye could see. But by the end of the century, industrialization and large-scale farms led to thousands of fields being abandoned, to begin a slow process of reforestation.

Our original plan was just to do relatively short trips around the east coast, mostly just beach camping in Montauk, NY, where the summer rental properties are insanely expensive. But eventually, that first camper took us across the country, all over the Baja Peninsula, down the Pacific Coast of Mexico and all over the Southwest USA. It’s incredibly liberating when you get really mobile and comfortable enough to live long term. When I found the Mercedes G Ambulance, I was originally going to just import it, but then I started thinking it would be a wasted opportunity to not also tour Europe, and while you’re at it you might as well dip down to North Africa and explore Morocco. It can kind of snowball once you start exploring. If you’re going to go here, you might as well check out there, and so on.
The World War Two Siege of Malta took place from 1940 to 1942. This tiny island’s prime location meant it was in the spotlight for the war on the Mediterranean. Malta certainly got the raw deal during the war from start to finish. The very day after Mussolini declared war – on June 10, 1940 – Italian bombers commenced attacking the capital of Valletta. Holding the record for heaviest sustained bombing, Malta endured a staggering attack lasting 154 days and nights with a total of 6,700 bombs dropped.
