And no one can figure out how it was built in the first place. ----- Satellite images are shedding new light on a mysterious city built on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Explorers first discovered the ruins of Nan Madol nearly 100 years ago, on the island of Pohnpei in Micronesia, the Independent reported. The island is situated about 1,600 miles from Australia, and 2,500 miles from Los Angeles, California. Some locals in Pohnpei refuse to go near the ruins of the city, believing it to be haunted, according to the Independent. Horror writer H.P. Lovecraft even took inspiration from Nan Madol for the fictional, sunken city of R’lyeh in one of his short stories. “Why would somebody build a city out in the middle of the ocean?” archaeologist Patrick Hunt said in a new episode of the “What on Earth?” show on the Science Channel, which discusses the satellite images. “Why here, so far away, from any other known civilization?” The city, which thrived from 1200 to 1700, was built on coral reefs, and is connected via a series of canals. Nan Madol served as a major political and religious city in Polynesia, and some locals call the ruins “Soun Nan-leng,” meaning “Reef of Heaven,” according to the Pohnpei Visitors’ Bureau. The ruins include tombs, baths, and temples. Nan Madol is made up of 92 artificial islands spread across 200 acres, Smithsonian Magazine reported. Some of the walls are 25-feet high, and the total weight of black rocks totals 750,000 metric tons, making it a larger undertaking than the Egyptian pyramids, according to the same report. Without the use of pulleys or other tools, the mystery lingers as to how the city was ever built. “We don’t know how they brought the columns here and we don’t know how they lifted them up to build the walls. Most Pohnpeians are content to believe they used magic to fly them,” an archeologist from Pohnpei told Smithsonian.

When America left the military base after the war, the remaining goods—everything from weaponry to bottles of Coca-Cola—were offered to the French and British at a very low price, 6 cents to the dollar. However, the colonizers were going on the assumption that should they refuse to buy the items, the U.S. military would be forced to simply leave them behind for free. The Americans were having none of this. To spite the British and French, the military made the rash decision to drive all of the vehicles, food, clothing, drinks, and other equipment to a wharf on the southern coast of the island. The army then drove all of the vehicles into the sea, used bulldozers to dump the rest of the supplies over the wharf, before also driving the bulldozers into the sea, ensuring that the European countries would not be able to get their hands on the items at all, free or otherwise. Millions of dollars worth of goods were completely destroyed over the period of those two days, rendered unusable at the bottom of the ocean. As a result of the dumping, the waters were contaminated with fuel, rubber, metal and other waste, leaving the local Vanuatuans shocked at the carnage, though they salvaged what they could once the Americans had finally departed.

The island of Ile Sainte-Marie (St Mary’s Island) is a tiny and beautiful island off the coast of Madagascar and boasts a very special little graveyard. Looking at Ile Sainte-Marie today, it seems a haven for wildlife, being renowned for humpback whale watching and loved by divers for its beautiful (shark free!) lagoon with substantial coral growth. However, Sainte-Marie wasn’t always such an idyllic landscape, but was a haven for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries. The first known pirate to take up residence was Adam Baldridge – who fled from a murder charge and turned to piracy – in 1691, and countless others followed in his footsteps until the last pirate resident, John Pro, in 1719. Sainte-Marie was ideal for habitation, with great swathes of native fruit trees (ideal for making rum!) and enough resources to support an approximate 1000 pirates over a 100 year period. In a map of 1733, the island was named quite simply ‘the island of pirates’.[1]

In “A Personal Portrait of Fidel,” novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez described Castro polishing off 18 scoops after Sunday lunch. His affection for ice cream was such that the CIA attempted to poison his milkshake. “That was the closest the CIA got to assassinating Fidel,” a retired state security general told Reuters in 2007.
