ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS anyone notices during a visit to Cambodia, is the unbearable heat. Sweltering and oppressive temperatures and humidity beat down on travelers wading through the dense tropical jungles of the Southern region. Incidentally, when a larger and more aggressive group of travelers, the French military, made their way through the country, they also found the weather brutal and unforgiving. As the unfamiliar temperatures began killing off French troops, the occupying European power needed to create artificial respite. Their answer to the tropical problem was Bokor Hill Station, a small resort town for French soldiers in the region.
Retiring by the sea might feel like a pipe dream but an attractive proposal by Italy’s new government could soon make it a reality. The plan’s purpose is to repopulate the southern Italian regions of Calabria, Sardinia and Sicily by inviting both national and international retirees to settle tax-free for 10 years. Apart from the obvious lure of not being bothered by the tax collector, there’s the added draw of the low cost of living and a higher quality of life – think sun, sand and incredible fresh produce to name but a few benefits. The proposal is the brainchild of Italy’s controversial far-right party The League, who make up half of the government. It has yet to be brought to parliament but is being suggested as part of an effort to bolster the economy in these regions. Unemployment and a shortage of jobs means that most local millennials have left for greener pastures. The lack of jobs, however, does not pose a problem for retirees. The League estimates they would inject €20,000 to €25,000 ($23,150 to $28,950) into struggling local economies.
It would be a stretch, perhaps, to describe it as a “holy grail” of travel. Wild legends have not taken root regarding its biblical origins. Chainmail-clad knights did not spend the medieval centuries questing across Middle Eastern landscapes and Somerset hilltops in search of it. And Hollywood films have not been made in its honour, with whip-cracking archaeologists battling evil regimes and implausible plot-lines to preserve it for humanity.

My most asked and least favorite question, “How do you pay for travel?” As much as I would like to have an easy answer for you- I don’t. There is no sercret key to being able to afford to travel the world (unless I haven’t gotten the memo). What I have learned is that no two journeys are the same just as no two destinations are. I can’t answer the how questions because I don’t know what I’m doing or even where I’m going most of the time. You don’t need to know exactly how someone else has done, whatever it is they are doing. There is no blueprint to success because success is a personal journey. You just have to pick a direction and get creative. After all, they say if you can see your path laid out in front of you step by step, chances are thats not your path. You forge your own path with every step you take. Thats why its yours.

With the concentration on ground fighting during the Cambodian Civil War, the government's navy was neglected. At the time of the coup that placed Lon Nol in charge of the government in 1970, the Ream Naval Base was in a very run-down state with one pier in horrible condition, no effective logistical support system and very little internal repair capability.[3] By 1974, Lon Nol's government together with the Khmer National Navy (MNK) and British Royal Navy had vastly improved the base by implementation of a number of actions: procurement of 20 newly constructed radar equipped PCFs (Swift Boats); stationing of four PBRs (River Patrol Boats) in the Kompong Som (Sihanoukville) port area; overhauls of all of the heavy craft in inventory; procurement of a newly overhauled floating drydock the base; substantial upgrade of the Ream Repair Facility equipment; installation of an effective supply support system; and the completion of a modern pier facility and support complex for the base.

The company was the brainchild of Mel Ziegler, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, and his wife Patricia Gwilliam Ziegler who worked as a courtroom artist for the same paper. Inspired by a surplus Bush jacket Mel brought back from a work trip to Australia, the couple eventually left their jobs and began buying bulk surplus vintage clothing–often altering it with new buttons or elbow patches and the like–and selling them at the Marin County Flea Market. When a large purchase of Spanish military shirts turned out to have unnaturally short arms they turned disaster into fortune by concocting the fictitious story of Generalissimo Franco’s “Short Armed Paratrooper Shirts”. A catalogue soon followed with similarly creative copy written by Mel and illustrations of the clothing by Patricia. Opening in 1978, a shop in their hometown of Mill Valley, California prospered thanks to their hard work and creative energy; but there were limits to how far they could grow: In 1983 they sold BR to Donald Fisher of the Gap who wisely insisted they remain as the heads of the company with a “hands off” agreement that promised total creative freedom. The infusion of money and manufacturing power of the Gap led to explosive growth: Lavishly decorated safari stores opened across the country, a team of writers and artists were hired to produce full color illustrated catalogues, and a flood of original clothing was designed and produced in factories across the world.
