ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS anyone notices during a visit to Cambodia, is the unbearable heat. Sweltering and oppressive temperatures and humidity beat down on travelers wading through the dense tropical jungles of the Southern region. Incidentally, when a larger and more aggressive group of travelers, the French military, made their way through the country, they also found the weather brutal and unforgiving. As the unfamiliar temperatures began killing off French troops, the occupying European power needed to create artificial respite. Their answer to the tropical problem was Bokor Hill Station, a small resort town for French soldiers in the region.

Santa Cruz del Islote, Colombia (CNN) — From a distance, it's hard at first to determine what Santa Cruz del Islote actually is. Rising from the sea, the island -- one of the most densely populated in the world -- appears to be floating. In fact, Santa Cruz -- located in Colombia's San Bernardo Archipelago in the Gulf of Morrosquillo -- sits on a combination of raised sea bed and coral. It's one of 10 islands in the archipelago. Legend has it that fishermen from the nearby islands spent the night on Santa Cruz and decided to stay there permanently when they realized there were no mosquitoes. Locals attribute the mosquito-free environment to the absence of mangroves and beaches. Santa Cruz isn't a traditional island retreat. There's nowhere for visitors to stay. Tourists often spend the night at the neighboring Punta Faro hotel on Múcura Island, and travel to Santa Cruz by speed boat to explore for a few hours. It's like stepping into a Gabriel García Márquez novel. Santa Cruz features a dreamlike, innocent way of life (there are no police on the island), and the colorful houses are passed down through generations, so there are no non-native residents. Some estimates put about 1,200 inhabitants on the tiny island that's about the size of two soccer fields. But some say the community is smaller.

On our second day in the world’s largest atoll, Marovo Lagoon, we spent the morning kayaking and then visited the small island of Sabulo, where a small open air market was set up for us on this uninhabited island. Artisan wood carvers from several nearby islands (who canoed over) presented their exceptional sculptures for sale. These islanders are renowned for their mother-of-pearl inlays in the figures and masks they carve. The inhabitants of the lagoon are regarded as the purveyors of the finest artisan products in the Pacific. We made several purchases…) We also had a chance to get a glimpse of lagoon islanders’ life. Two young women set off on an incredible journey in 1916 -- sisters Augusta and Adeline Van Buren began the first successful transcontinental motorcycle tour across the U.S. by two women on solo motorcycles. They rode 5,500 miles in 60 days often over unpaved roads while traveling from NYC to Tijuana, Mexico. The imminent entrance of the U.S. into WWI inspired the sisters' feat as they sought to prove that women could ride as well as men and were capable of serving as military dispatch riders. The women dressed in military-style leggings and leather riding breeches which were taboo at that time for women and, as a result, they were arrested several times along the way for wearing men's clothing. Yet, these two inspirational trailblazers were undaunted. As Augusta famously once stated, “Woman can if she will.” Following their historic journey, both women continued to be trailblazers -- Adeline went on to earn a law degree at New York University while Augusta became a pilot and joined Amelia Earhart's international women's flying organization the Ninety-Nines. Augusta also became active in the women's rights movement fighting to win women the right to vote. Our original plan was just to do relatively short trips around the east coast, mostly just beach camping in Montauk, NY, where the summer rental properties are insanely expensive. But eventually, that first camper took us across the country, all over the Baja Peninsula, down the Pacific Coast of Mexico and all over the Southwest USA. It’s incredibly liberating when you get really mobile and comfortable enough to live long term. When I found the Mercedes G Ambulance, I was originally going to just import it, but then I started thinking it would be a wasted opportunity to not also tour Europe, and while you’re at it you might as well dip down to North Africa and explore Morocco. It can kind of snowball once you start exploring. If you’re going to go here, you might as well check out there, and so on.
