Stretching a whopping 1,140 meters (3,740 feet) long, the ride snakes through the undergrowth at Penang's ESCAPE theme park is claimed to have smashed the previous record for world's longest waterslide held by Action Park, a theme park in Vernon, New Jersey. Unlike the New Jersey version, which is inflatable, ESCAPE's new slide is made of fiber-reinforced polymer and is a permanent structure attached to steel poles. ESCAPE's massive new slide takes riders on a four-minute journey through the jungle. "Breaking the world record was never our intention," said Sim Choo Kheng, CEO of ESCAPE operator Sim Leisure Group, in a statement. "I'm always baffled by how rides are made so short and quick. I wanted to build rides that last a good few minutes." The slide offers a four-minute ride that meanders its way down a 70-meter slope, passing through jungle scenery.

The Bergensbanen departs Oslo Central Station several times a day. On the voyage—which averages seven hours—the high-altitude railway line roars across the Hardangervidda plateau, passing landscapes more breathtaking than you can imagine. It barrels through green valleys, sparkling lakes, dense forests, snow-capped mountains, gushing waterfalls, winding rivers, dramatic fjords and a total of 180 tunnels before rolling into its terminus. To say that the train from Oslo to Bergen has the power to make you focus on the journey and forget about the destination isn't overselling it, not by a long shot.

Late on afternoon in the ­Ecuadoran Amazon, a short but imposing Achuar tribeswoman walked up to me with a knife in her hand. The Achuar are the tribe next door to the Shuar, who are known for their historical tradition of shrinking the heads of slain enemies. (Both tribes were formerly, and politically incorrectly, known as the Jívaro, which comes from the Spanish jíbaro, meaning “savage.”) The Achuar had, at the time I visited in 1998, the world’s second-highest murder rate. I was there with an anthropologist named John Patton, who studies intratribal murder and revenge, and the Conambo River Valley was a fruitful place for him to be. Achuar men do not so much as go out for a piss without bringing a rifle.

At the time of the coup that placed Lon Nol in charge of the government in 1970, the Ream Naval Base was in a very run-down state with one pier in horrible condition, no effective logistical support system and very little internal repair capability.[3] By 1974, Lon Nol's government together with the Khmer National Navy (MNK) and British Royal Navy had vastly improved the base by implementation of a number of actions: procurement of 20 newly constructed radar equipped PCFs (Swift Boats); stationing of four PBRs (River Patrol Boats) in the Kompong Som (Sihanoukville) port area; overhauls of all of the heavy craft in inventory; procurement of a newly overhauled floating drydock the base; substantial upgrade of the Ream Repair Facility equipment; installation of an effective supply support system; and the completion of a modern pier facility and support complex for the base.
