In 1989, Mauro Morandi’s boat docked on Budelli Island off the northern coast of Sardinia, Italy. Head shops serve as a reminder of the street's hippie heyday, while stalwart Federal mansions remain a link to the area's more distant—and upscale—past. If something has happened in the East Village in the last two centuries, there's a good chance St. Marks Place has played a role. Yet the street has never been a perfect microcosm of the East Village; those mansions were an anomaly, and the hippies were, too. St. Marks is the most famous street in the East Village, but is it a part of the "real" neighborhood at all? The farmland that today comprises St. Marks Place was originally owned by Dutch Director General Peter Stuyvesant, who bought the bouwerij (or "Bowery" as it came to be known) in 1651. Few traces of Stuyvesant's era remain beyond his own grave, which lies in a vault at St. Mark's Church-in-the-Bowery, the Episcopal parish constructed in 1799 on the site of what had once been Stuyvesant's private chapel. The church sits just off Stuyvesant Street, which ran from the Bowery Lane into the heart of the property; it and the Bowery are the only colonial farm roads in the area that survived the implementation of the Commissioners' Plan for the city in 1811.

We're used to hearing about the exotic places everyone has to visit during their lifetime. When you see places like that, you might think to add it to your vacation wishlist, but what about the locations you can definitely leave off your bucket list? While some spots aren't worth the visit, other destinations are simply forbidden. Canggu is a place where people go to feel rich. The clicking of keyboards in the Balinese town’s co-working spaces is drowned out only by the roar of mopeds. Over smoothie bowls and lattes, western immigrants – expats, as they prefer to be known – talk about themselves, loudly. A local woman will massage your body, silently, for the equivalent of a few pounds. Everyone is very good-looking. Everything is very cheap. The town, once a stop-off for backpackers en route to Ubud’s yoga studios and hippy scene, has in recent years become a hub for self-described “digital nomads”. In Canggu’s cafés, barefoot westerners run fledgling companies from MacBook Pros. When not talking Facebook ads or cost-per-click, they socialise exclusively with each other. “The thing is, not many Indonesians are on a level with bule [an Indonesian term for foreigners],” explains one digital nomad over the fart of hot tub jets in Amo, a luxury spa. Around us, statue-like men wander in and out of steam rooms (CrossFit is big here), talking about e-commerce and intermittent fasting.

Compared to the ultra-high-speed bullet trains of Japan, the breakneck speeds allowed on Germany’s autobahn, and the efficiency of the Swiss rail system, getting around the U.S. is often slow, inefficient, and often pretty dull. That’s thanks in large part to our reliance on decades-old freeways to get everywhere. Whether driving to and from work, across town, or between the coasts, most of the country’s traffic is restricted to the same 50,000 miles of Interstate Highways. But, buried amid the four million total miles of marked roads criss-crossing the country are some of the most amazing drives in the world. If you’re looking for stunning, Instagram-worthy scenery and, most importantly, as few other travelers as possible, these are some of the quietest, loneliest scenic roads in America.
