When New York entered lockdown in the spring, 30-year-old Jenna* couldn’t believe some people she knew were still getting on planes. “There was one girl I just wanted to unfriend who was throwing parties and literally traveling nonstop. I was like, People are fighting for their lives right now,” she says. But by July, with no clear end date to the pandemic in sight, Jenna’s mentality changed. “At this point, I didn’t really give a shit,” she says. “I hadn’t traveled for six months, which is the longest time I’ve ever not traveled since I was a baby.”
The World War Two Siege of Malta took place from 1940 to 1942. This tiny island’s prime location meant it was in the spotlight for the war on the Mediterranean. Malta certainly got the raw deal during the war from start to finish. The very day after Mussolini declared war – on June 10, 1940 – Italian bombers commenced attacking the capital of Valletta. Holding the record for heaviest sustained bombing, Malta endured a staggering attack lasting 154 days and nights with a total of 6,700 bombs dropped. Air raids throughout the war over Malta totalled 3,343.
La Cueva (“The Cave”) is a favorite weekend spot for locals and the venturesome tourists that get wind of it by word of mouth. The cavernous disco is located on the northern outskirts of town, about a 10-minute walk up a hill away from the center of Trinidad, an old Spanish colony that feels even more preserved in time than the rest of Cuba. Two hundred miles from the bustle of Havana, horses still trot down the narrow cobblestone streets of sleepy Trinidad, a Caribbean coastal town founded by Spanish explorers in the 1500s that rose to prominence as Cuba’s sugar economy boomed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The historic town is an unlikely setting for one of the world’s most bizarre discos. As you approach La Cueva, the first curious thing you’ll notice is there’s no noise at all coming from the club. It’s not until you walk through the gated entrance, descend down a long flight of stairs and through a tunnel into the jagged cavity that the dance floor opens up and the music starts blaring. The second thing you’ll notice is that it’s very hot. You’re in the Caribbean after all, dancing in a throng of a thousand people. In a cave.
The best part about Puglia? The absence of crowds. Despite being a long-established agricultural powerhouse, Puglia has only recently emerged as a desirable tourism destination in the last fifteen years after suffering a long period of under-appreciation. “The dark age of Puglia started with the unification of Italy, for sure,” says Vito Palumbo, a native of Puglia’s capital, Bari, and the brand manager for Tormaresca, a wine producer bringing international recognition to the region. “Now Puglia is the most vibrant part of Southern Italy.
