Fans of "The Simpsons" now slurp a Squishee and gulp Lard Lad Donuts at the world's first real-life Kwik-E-Mart in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It's designed like a favorite location from the long-running animated TV series, and it opened Friday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Other items for sale include memorabilia associated with Bart Simpson, his parents, Homer and Marge, sisters Lisa and Maggie and the rest of the globally known characters from the town of Springfield. Those include Apu, owner of the show's convenience store, Kwik-E-Mart, who is of Indian descent. The show received criticism recently from viewers troubled by the stereotypical characterization, like Apu's accent provided by actor Hank Azaria. "The Simpsons" is known for its many catchphrases, including one from Apu that is painted on a wall inside the store: "Thank you, come again!" it says. Mark Cornell, of SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment, one of the developers, said the first visitors included three generations of a family, all arguing playfully about who was the bigger "Simpsons" fan. "To see three generations walk through the door that all love 'The Simpsons,' how can you say that about anything else?" he told CNN affiliate WBTW. The store is next door to a "Simpsons"-themed Aztec Theater expected to open later this year.

Costa Rica is getting something right. The Central American country of stunning beaches, rainforests, and biodiversity, is also known for its stable democracy and educated population. Its president, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, said at Davos 2019: “Seventy years ago, Costa Rica did away with the army. This allows for many things. Eight percent of our GDP is invested in education because we don't have to spend on the army. So our strength is human talent, human wellbeing.” By comparison, World Bank data shows the US spent less than 5% of its GDP on education, while the world average is just 4.8%. President Alvarado said not spending on the armed forces also allowed his country to protect the environment. Costa Rica generates more than 99% of its electricity from renewable sources, with the vast majority from hydroelectric dams. Eight years ago, when I retired, sold almost everything I owned and began traveling the world, I didn’t do it to escape or to separate myself from the things I loved. I did it because I wanted to add some experience and adventure to my life. To move toward being my genuine self, instead of continuing the cookie-cutter life that society had designed for me. However, it didn’t take long to find that moving toward new things in life inevitably moves you away from others. I wanted to share the things I discovered about the world and myself with my old friends, but I found that, because there was no common thread to follow, not many were interested. You met your old friends at a different place and in a different phase of your life. While there still may be affection, your interests and theirs - unless you continue to share common experiences - grow apart. That doesn’t make your new experiences any more valuable than theirs, but it does mean that there is nothing to share or bond over. Nothing in common to discuss. Sure, trekking Tiger Leaping Gorge in China may be exciting for you, but apart from that time you got lost or almost fell, your non-adventure seeking friends just won’t care. They can’t relate.
While countries in Europe and the Caribbean are slowly (and shakily) reopening for travel this year, Google searches for 2021 travel have increased by 124 percent since March, indicating that many people are getting an early start on 2021 trip planning. Luxury travel company Kuoni analyzed Google search data in all languages to identify the destinations that people are most interested in visiting next year. The map below shows the destination that each country is most eager to visit, based on Google searches for “[destination] 2021” and “[destination] holiday 2021.” On a global scale, the most popular 2021 destination is the United Arab Emirates, followed by a three-way tie among Qatar, Canada, and the United States.

Tkachenko says the project is about humanity's utopian drive for technological progress. But this drive came at a high price, he thinks, because governments were ready to sacrifice almost everything for it. "I travel in search of places which used to have great importance for the technical progress, and which are now deserted," he writes on his website. "Those places lost their significance together with the utopian ideology which is now obsolete. Secret cities that cannot be found on maps, forgotten scientific triumphs, abandoned buildings of almost inhuman complexity. The perfect technocratic future that never came."
