In 1989, Mauro Morandi’s boat docked on Budelli Island off the northern coast of Sardinia, Italy. Discovering that the island’s caretaker was retiring within the next two days, Mauro decided to extend his stay indefinitely and step into the role himself. As Hollywood boomed in the early 1930s, moviegoers wanted to see more of the world, and the film industry had the means to show it to them. Films set in exotic locations grew popular for this reason, with South Seas-inspired stories becoming a particular draw. Decades before South Pacific hit Broadway stages, films of the era featured white, male adventurers and native maidens grappling with magical island enchantment, shipwrecks, pirates, romance, and the like. They were a hit, and Polynesia became the de facto image of paradise in America’s collective imagination.

Located just over 1,500 miles from Japan, Tinian was an ideal launch site for the U.S. 509th Composite Group and 313th Bombardment Wing. But first, a massive construction project had to be undertaken on the north end of Tinian. Working for more than 45 days and nights, troops built docks, airport runways, barracks, an administration building, oil storage facilities, weapons depots, an air-conditioned bomb assembly building, and two bomb loading pits. Poised to protect this valuable harbor was one of the largest forts ever built. Nearly thirty years in the making (1846-1875), Fort Jefferson was never finished nor fully armed. Yet it was a vital link in a chain of coastal forts that stretched from Maine to California. Fort Jefferson, the most sophisticated of these, was a brilliant and undeniable symbol that the United States wanted to be left alone. Though never attacked, the fort fulfilled its intended role. It helped to protect the peace and prosperity of a young nation. During the Civil War, Union warships used the harbor in their campaign to blockade Southern shipping. The fort was also used as a prison, mainly for Union deserters. Its most famous prisoner was Dr. Samuel Mudd, the physician who set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth. Abandoned by the Army in 1874, the fort was later used as a coaling station for warships. In 1898, the USS Maine sailed into history, departing the Tortugas on its fateful mission to Havana, Cuba. In many countries in Southeast Asia, such as Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, the arrival of spring also marks the beginning of the new year. For a country with 7,000 years of history, Malta isn’t usually a place that comes up often on your radar of potential vacation spots. It gets overlooked for other Mediterranean spots like Cinque Terre or Positano or Corfu. Here’s why it shouldn’t. On a map, Malta looks like just a peek of land below Sicily; you’d miss it if you weren’t squinting with the intention to find it. But this Mediterranean nation is a unique gift that keeps on giving for travelers who like food, wine, beaches, and history. Two majorly important Caravaggio paintings are here under one roof, in one of the most jaw-droppingly gilded cathedrals you’ll ever see. The island is home to the oldest free-standing structures on the planet (yes, older than the pyramids). They make a very tiny quantity of very good wine, and more than enough cheese to eat along with it. Most recently, its claim to fame has been Hollywood’s use of the timeless landscape for filming (i.e. Game of Thrones, Gladiator, Assassin's Creed, Murder on the Orient Express). With tourism numbers growing wildly every year, it’s time to visit Malta.
