For a country with 7,000 years of history, Malta isn’t usually a place that comes up often on your radar of potential vacation spots. It gets overlooked for other Mediterranean spots like Cinque Terre or Positano or Corfu. Here’s why it shouldn’t. On a map, Malta looks like just a peek of land below Sicily; you’d miss it if you weren’t squinting with the intention to find it. But this Mediterranean nation is a unique gift that keeps on giving for travelers who like food, wine, beaches, and history. Two majorly important Caravaggio paintings are here under one roof, in one of the most jaw-droppingly gilded cathedrals you’ll ever see. The island is home to the oldest free-standing structures on the planet (yes, older than the pyramids). They make a very tiny quantity of very good wine, and more than enough cheese to eat along with it. Most recently, its claim to fame has been Hollywood’s use of the timeless landscape for filming (i.e. Game of Thrones, Gladiator, Assassin's Creed, Murder on the Orient Express). With tourism numbers growing wildly every year, it’s time to visit Malta.

(CNN) — Like something straight out of a fairytale, the abandoned village of Houtouwan on Shengshan Island, part of the Shengsi Archipelago off the eastern coast of China, has recently become an Internet sensation and an unusual travel hotspot. Houtouwan was once a prosperous fishing village, with a 1980s population of more than 3,000 residents. However, because of its remote and hard-to-access location, its residents started to move out in the '90s. In 2002, the village was officially depopulated and merged into a nearby village. After decades of abandonment, empty houses in the ocean-facing, cliffside village -- some of them still furnished -- have been taken over by a blanket of lush climbing plants.

On our second day in the world’s largest atoll, Marovo Lagoon, we spent the morning kayaking and then visited the small island of Sabulo, where a small open air market was set up for us on this uninhabited island. Artisan wood carvers from several nearby islands (who canoed over) presented their exceptional sculptures for sale. These islanders are renowned for their mother-of-pearl inlays in the figures and masks they carve. The inhabitants of the lagoon are regarded as the purveyors of the finest artisan products in the Pacific. We made several purchases…) We also had a chance to get a glimpse of lagoon islanders’ life. In the afternoon we had more opportunities for snorkeling in the pristine waters that were teeming with sea life.
