When I was young I would pore over National Geographic magazines and dream of adventures like this — train hopping through the Sahara Desert on one of the world’s longest trains. I had dreamt of the oceans, of the sand, the loud clattering noises of the train, the cold, the wind, the scorching sun. The unknown smells and sounds of the desert, and all the discomfort that goes with it. That visceral experience was exactly what we got as we slithered night and day through the vast uninhabited desert, sleeping on top of Mauritania’s infamous iron ore train. And trust me when I say my fellow co-workers and I at REI’s Seattle-area headquarters know a thing or two about getting out of town. Combine the city’s infamous rain with its northern latitude (it’s the most northerly major city in in the Lower 48), and you have a recipe for cabin fever without the cabin. So a midwinter retreat to sunnier locales is an annual tradition for many. Good thing we have the folks at REI Co-op Experiences, our adventure travel outfitters, to turn to for a little inspiration. Well, more than a little⁠: They have nearly 100 trips scheduled between Dec. 2019 and March 2020 alone, and their teams are constantly sending back photos back from their trips, many of which promise warm weather, sunny days and plenty of adventure. And as the Co-op Journal's travel editor, part of my job is sorting through them, which is both a blessing and a curse. Here are a few I’ll be daydreaming of as winter settles in.

In Morocco, people don't call for an Uber; instead, they pile into Grand Taxis – battered but colourful old diesel Mercedes that are North Africa's answer to Cuba's vintage cars. Many diesel Mercedes (especially the W123 240D model) from the 1970s and '80s have spent their twilight years as Grand Taxis in the sun, after being shipped over when deemed too old for the European market. Here they have become part of the fabric of society, providing an essential long-distance travel link for locals as well as a colourful snapshot for tourists, much like the old American cars in Cuba. The Bergensbanen departs Oslo Central Station several times a day. On the voyage—which averages seven hours—the high-altitude railway line roars across the Hardangervidda plateau, passing landscapes more breathtaking than you can imagine.
