It's designed like a favorite location from the long-running animated TV series, and it opened Friday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Other items for sale include memorabilia associated with Bart Simpson, his parents, Homer and Marge, sisters Lisa and Maggie and the rest of the globally known characters from the town of Springfield. Those include Apu, owner of the show's convenience store, Kwik-E-Mart, who is of Indian descent. The show received criticism recently from viewers troubled by the stereotypical characterization, like Apu's accent provided by actor Hank Azaria. "The Simpsons" is known for its many catchphrases, including one from Apu that is painted on a wall inside the store: "Thank you, come again!" it says. Mark Cornell, of SimEx-Iwerks Entertainment, one of the developers, said the first visitors included three generations of a family, all arguing playfully about who was the bigger "Simpsons" fan. "To see three generations walk through the door that all love 'The Simpsons,' how can you say that about anything else?" he told CNN affiliate WBTW. The store is next door to a "Simpsons"-themed Aztec Theater expected to open later this year.

For two days in 1944, Allied bombers rained destruction on the beaches of the Caroline Islands in the South Pacific. During World War II, the lagoon was host to Japan’s Imperial Fleet, which was left destroyed in the wake of Operation Hailstone, often referred to as Japan’s Pearl Harbor. Today, hundreds of Japanese aircraft and other military machines remain at the bottom of the lagoon, making it one of the world’s best World War II wreck dive sites. The islands were once part of the Spanish West Indies, explored by Magellan and later visited by Spanish merchants and missionaries. The low coral islands are surrounded by a remarkable, sheltered reef — ideal for housing a navy. On February 17, 1944, five fleet carriers and four light carriers, along with support ships and some 500 aircraft, descended on the islands in a surprise attack. Just a week before the attack, the Japanese military had moved additional ships to the area, and, as a result, approximately 250 Japanese aircraft were destroyed and more than 50 ships sunk. An estimated 400 Japanese soldiers were killed in one ship alone, trapped in the cargo hold. Most of the fleet remains in exactly the same spot it was left, largely forgotten by the world until the late 1960s. Jacques Cousteau’s 1969 film Lagoon of Lost Ships (www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAqxu2RKO04) explored the wreck-littered lagoon, and many of the sunken ships were then still full of bodies. As wreck divers brought attention to the site, Japan began recovery efforts, and many bodies have been removed and returned to Japan for burial. A few, however, remain. Many of the wrecks are visible through the shallow, clear water, making it an accessible dive. The wrecks themselves can be very dangerous, not only because of ragged edges and tangles of cables but because of half-century old oil and fuel leaking into the water, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Up until the 1990s, the lagoon was known at Truk, but it is now called Chuuk. Many maps still show both names.

My friend April, adventurous sailor and world traveler, had told me of Moonhole not long after we sailed our boats to the Caribbean island of Bequia. The island of Ile Sainte-Marie (St Mary’s Island) is a tiny and beautiful island off the coast of Madagascar and boasts a very special little graveyard. Looking at Ile Sainte-Marie today, it seems a haven for wildlife, being renowned for humpback whale watching and loved by divers for its beautiful (shark free!) lagoon with substantial coral growth. However, Sainte-Marie wasn’t always such an idyllic landscape, but was a haven for pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries. The first known pirate to take up residence was Adam Baldridge – who fled from a murder charge and turned to piracy – in 1691, and countless others followed in his footsteps until the last pirate resident, John Pro, in 1719. Sainte-Marie was ideal for habitation, with great swathes of native fruit trees (ideal for making rum!) and enough resources to support an approximate 1000 pirates over a 100 year period. In a map of 1733, the island was named quite simply ‘the island of pirates’.[1]
