While it’s no secret that antenna use is on the rise in the age of cord cutting, a new survey by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) includes a surprising detail about just who is turning to this decades-old way to watch free TV. Last year, 31% of U.S. households had an antenna hooked up to at least one television, up from 28% in 2015, but among 25- to 34-year-olds, antenna adoption was even higher than average, at 45%. Meanwhile, just 19% of homes in the 65 to 74 age demographic used an antenna last year. Income was not a factor in antenna ownership, the CTA says, suggesting that practically everyone is looking to escape cable’s inflating prices, regardless of financial status. Antenna use is now the highest it’s been since 2005, and cable and satellite TV are in steady decline. Cable adoption was at 44% last year, versus 61% in 2008, while satellite TV has fallen from 31% in 2008 to 24% last year. Those downward trends will continue in 2019, with Charter and Comcast losing 145,000 and 107,000 TV subscribers, respectively, last quarter, and AT&T shedding 544,000 DirecTV satellite and U-Verse customers.
But some of these influencers are looking for something more: They want to own their photos and their audiences. They want freedom from the algorithms that decide who sees their content. And they want to stop relying on sponsored content and ad posts. Meanwhile, users have similar concerns. Some, fed up with the constant privacy violations and lack of transparency on the part of platforms, are looking away from the news feed and toward the refuge of messaging, small groups, and even separate apps like Renner’s and Rose’s. They all offer an antidote to Big Social Media. The company Escapex, which makes these apps, offers exactly that. Each app is a decentralized social media platform that acts like Instagram but is fully controlled by the influencer, offering them an unique insurance policy: When Instagram’s popularity inevitably shifts, they’ll still have their own safe haven for their biggest fans to congregate–and pay them. And for fans, they get more than an intimate glimpse at their chosen celeb; they also get a community of people who feel the same way.
Girls’ Night In, the popular self-care newsletter with over 100,00 subscribers, just hit a new milestone: The D.C.-based editorial platform announced it raised a pre-seed round of $500,000 from SV Angel, Third Kind Capital, and Combine VC. With the funding, GNI intends to grow beyond its newsletter prowess and invest in more offline events. “We’re really trying to double down on our mission statement, which is to help women relax, recharge, and build more meaningful communities,” founder Alisha Ramos tells Fast Company. Ramos, 29, launched GNI two years ago after she no longer felt compelled to go to loud bars or rowdy clubs, and instead treasured quieter hangouts with her female friends. She funneled that sentiment into a weekly newsletter that emphasized indoor pursuits, like beauty rituals, cooking, book reading, and more. It started as mix of encouraging people to spend quality time with friends as well as engage in much-needed solo time. The tagline read: “A newsletter for women who’d rather stay in tonight.”
