Twitter announced this week its publisher partners — including names like BuzzFeed, Disney, and Viacom — can now globally monetize their videos on the social media platform using in-stream ads. Previously, publishers only earned ad revenue from views in areas where they were based — so, a company based in the U.S. would earn revenue on views in the U.S., but not views from, say, Brazil. The platform said in its announcement that in the first half of 2018, in-stream ads generated twice as much revenue as they did in the first half of 2017. Twitter previously revealed during its first-quarter earnings report this year that money from in-stream ads (which can come in the form of pre-, mid-, or post-roll) now makes up more than half of total ad revenues. That equals out to roughly $287.5 million in Q1 and about $300 million Q2. Expanding publishers’ ability to monetize worldwide is meant to further increase those revenues and help establish Twitter as a platform where publishers can make some actual dough. Twitter’s biggest potential competitor in the space on the ad-supported video front (aka YouTube) already has a massive global distribution network that allows publishers to get paid regardless of where their content is being watched. This new initiative puts Twitter on a more equal competitive ground. Plus, Twitter is self-reportedly seeing more videos become popular outside of their intended markets, and wants to cash in on that popularity.
Twitter has unveiled nine new premium video sport contents deals at Sportel Asia, in addition to the live original programming, live games, highlights and events on the platform. The nine new sports partners include Asian Tour, Astro Malaysia, BallBall, Eleven Sports, FOX Sports Asia, International Table Tennis Federations, NetTV, SportsFix TV and TV ONE. Each of these partners will be able to utilise Twitter’s In-stream Sponsorships which enables publisher partners to monetise and sponsor exclusive video content while reaching out to engage audiences, the press statement read. The video content shared on Twitter will also include a short pre-roll ad from content sponsors, in addition to a range of existing deals available to APAC advertisers. This looks to bring even more opportunities for advertisers in Asia Pacific to align their brand with premium sports video content. According to the press release, Aneesh Madani, head of sports partnership for Asia Pacific, Twitter, will be presenting the content offerings to conference attendees, as well as brand and agency partners at a special Twitter workshop held at Sportel Asia.
The San Francisco-based social network also said it would not allow people to use software to simultaneously perform other actions such as liking or retweeting from multiple accounts. Twitter, known for freewheeling discussions in short messages, is under pressure from users and Western governments to stem the spread of false news and foreign propaganda, often done with the help of automated accounts known as bots. Twitter bots disseminated propaganda before the 2016 U.S. elections and have continued to inflame U.S. politics under cover of anonymity, academic researchers and U.S. authorities say.
