Chinese social media apps have struggled to win over users beyond their home turf. ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, is changing that — and it could soon be one of the world's most valuable startups. --- The video apps are even more lucrative because they attract a lot of users in their teens and 20s. That's what makes ByteDance such a threat to more established Chinese social media platforms, according to Xiaofeng Wang, an analyst with research firm Forrester. "Consumers have limited time and attention. [Whoever] wins consumers especially younger generations will win advertising dollars," she said. ByteDance also makes money through revenue sharing deals. People on TikTok, for example, can buy digital coins to give to other people on the app — like throwing money in a performer's tip jar. ByteDance takes a cut of those earnings.

Facebook has struck a landmark deal with Spain's top soccer league to broadcast its matches in India. Under the agreement announced Tuesday, the social network will broadcast 380 first division La Liga matches a year. The games, which will feature teams including FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, will be shown live and for free. The three-year deal is the latest example of tech companies wresting sports broadcasting rights away from traditional broadcasters. It could also boost Facebook in India, a key market where the social network is hoping to add hundreds of millions of users. In addition to India, Facebook (FB) said it would also broadcast the matches in neighboring countries, including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal. "As home to the two most-followed sports clubs on Facebook and some of the world's most iconic footballers, La Liga has a huge global presence on our platform," Peter Hutton, the head of global live sports programming at Facebook, said in a statement. "We see this as a great opportunity to not only bring people together around world-class football, but also help La Liga reach new audiences and grow its visibility in a key development market," he added.

Ads from over 300 companies and organizations -- including tech giants, major retailers, newspapers and government agencies -- ran on YouTube channels promoting white nationalists, Nazis, pedophilia, conspiracy theories and North Korean propaganda, a CNN investigation has found. Companies such as Adidas (ADDDF), Amazon (AMZN), Cisco (CSCO), Facebook (FB), Hershey (HSY), Hilton (HLT), LinkedIn, Mozilla, Netflix (NFLX), Nordstrom (JWN) and Under Armour (UA) may have unknowingly helped finance some of these channels via the advertisements they paid for on Google-owned YouTube (GOOGL). US tax dollars may have gone to the channels, too. Ads from five US government agencies, such as the Department of Transportation and Centers for Disease Control, appeared on the channels. Many of the companies that responded to CNN said they were unaware their ads had been placed on these channels and were investigating how they ended up there. One of the companies, Under Armour, is pausing its advertising buy on the platform after CNN notified the company its ads appeared on a white nationalist YouTube channel called "Wife With A Purpose."
