In 1841, fourteen year-old, Manjiro Nakahama, was fishing off the coast of Japan when he encountered a bad storm, went adrift, and was rescued by an American whaling ship, the John Howland. The ships captain William H. Whitfield, took a keen interest in the bright young Manjiro, and brought him back to his hometown of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. In Fairhaven, Manjiro received an education in subjects like English, algebra, sailing and shipbuilding. Thanks to the kindness shown by his adopted community, Manjiro became an upstanding young man. He joined the crew of a whaling ship, becoming its First Mate, and later he even went to California to seek his fortune during the Gold Rush. When Manjiro was 24 years old he returned to Japan. But upon his arrival he was investigated and convicted for violating the government's national seclusion laws. Yet with the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853, the government quickly came to appreciate Manjiro's English skills and his unique knowledge of America. In 1860, Manjiro joined the crew of the Kanrin Maru, serving as an interpreter for Japan's first diplomatic mission to cross the Pacific Ocean. Thanks to his considerable maritime skills, he provided invaluable assistance to the ship's captain Kaishu Katsu. To this day, Manjiro and Captain Whitfield's descendents have remained in contact, and they have maintained their families' unique friendship for five generations.
