A little known island atoll 2500 miles SW of Hawaii in the Marshall Islands called Kwajalein, has probably been more responsible for our peace and survival than any other place in America or the world. Here is where our enemies observed firsthand how accurate and potentially deadly our ballistic missiles and missile systems were, and are today or could be if we ever had to use them. The Russians kept a spy ship we called, "Brand X," near Kwajalein monitoring our missile tests as we did and do to them with our own spy ships. Ironically, I found myself five years later on a mission that I was a part of for a brief period serving aboard the Navy's brand new high tech spy ship on her maiden voyage in early 1982. That ship has since been retired after millions of dollars of upgrade and many years of vital intelligence gathering service for our country.

KWAJALEIN, Marshall Islands — There are nights when the skies above this remote atoll are streaked with what seem to be strange shooting stars, burning with unnatural brightness and rumbling like thunder. Every now and then, there are stunning displays as the flares hurtle off in different directions, moving among scattered clouds as they trace serpentine paths in the sky. Such celestial spectacles are not meteors from the heavens, but test warheads from ICBMs (intercontinental ballistic missiles). Since 1959, about one thousand missiles have been launched toward Kwajalein, where the U.S. Army’s Strategic Defense Command operates one of the world’s most sophisticated ranges for tracking space vehicles. The missiles, nearly all of them launched from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, soar hundreds of miles above the Pacific, releasing non-nuclear test warheads that splash down in or near the “world’s largest catcher’s mitt"--Kwajalein’s 950-square-mile, crescent-shaped lagoon.

ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS anyone notices during a visit to Cambodia, is the unbearable heat. Sweltering and oppressive temperatures and humidity beat down on travelers wading through the dense tropical jungles of the Southern region. Incidentally, when a larger and more aggressive group of travelers, the French military, made their way through the country, they also found the weather brutal and unforgiving. As the unfamiliar temperatures began killing off French troops, the occupying European power needed to create artificial respite. Their answer to the tropical problem was Bokor Hill Station, a small resort town for French soldiers in the region.

In 1855, a cluster of cave dwellings like this one were made in Langenstein, a village of around 2,000 inhabitants in Halberstadt, near Germany’s Harz Mountains. Five of the 10 caves have been carefully preserved and are now open to visitors. Scholle, a member of the Langensteiner Höhlenwohnungen association, offers regular tours of these curious quarters. These aren’t the first such cave homes in the region, he notes, pointing to a mountaintop in the near distance where the castle of Langenstein—the Altenburg—once stood. “There were natural caves there that people lived in from around 1787 until 1916, with postal addresses and everything,” he says. “Those were our first inhabited caves.” One of the Altenburg caves, too, has been preserved and is open to the public.
