Ross Island, an abandoned British settlement in the remote Andaman archipelago, is being taken over by its rightful owner: nature. Situated in the Bay of Bengal, India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands are an isolated group of 572 tropical islands, of which only 38 are currently inhabited. Nautically located closer to South East Asia than India, they are known for stunning beaches, thriving marine life, rich coral reefs and largely undisturbed primary forests. My friend April, adventurous sailor and world traveler, had told me of Moonhole not long after we sailed our boats to the Caribbean island of Bequia. The story was one that captured my attention and drew me in instantly. It was a story of an American — Tom Johnston — who dreamed of living a life at one with nature, a life of peacefulness without the trappings of society, without electricity or technology. A story of how that same American, in 1964, founded a community of homes that were built with materials only found on the small island of Bequia — whale bones, rocks, shells, concrete, discarded anchor chains, etc.
