The minds behind Chef’s Table are back and bringing the foodie spotlight to the East, with a world premiere of all-new food documentary Street Food. From Apr 26, salivate over mouth-watering delicacies and touching human-interest stories that will thaw even the most frozen of hearts. Exclusively featuring street vendors in a nine-part series, this Netflix original hopes to bring every featured country’s culture and cuisine to life, by casting a light on the tales that go on behind the stove. Each episode ventures into a different city: Bangkok, Osaka, Delhi, Yogyakarta, Chiayi, Seoul, Ho Chi Minh City, Cebu and Singapore; exploring not only the most popular street eats of the country, but also documenting the toil behind each and every plate. The series celebrates each pair of skilled hands that have helped painstakingly build a culinary legacy; as the emotional journeys of our unsung food heroes are captured in gorgeous technicolour, you can almost smell the aroma of freshly cooked street grub, right from your screen.

“Guess where this is,” he probes. Looking down at the postcard-sized print of lush greenery before us, we can’t—but he already knew that. 28-year-old printmaker Samuel Chia sits contentedly in his chair, gingerly caressing the pages of the massive coffee-table book he’s brought. Each one holds a delicate print of nature. “What's really interesting is that you can take a collection of 70 photographs made of landscapes in Singapore from any photographer, show it to Singaporeans, and there should be at least one of the 70 where people can identify where it is,” he says. “But in my book, there’s not a single photograph where you can identify the location—which should not be possible because Singapore's way too small. There’s way too many of us, and we are quite familiar with (the island). It should not be possible to make a picture of Singapore that doesn't look like Singapore.” And yet he’s done it. In-between Places is less a natural documentary publication than it is a labour of love. Composed of 70 photographs of wild nature Chia created himself, it is the painstaking culmination of what he describes as a 14-year “spiritual process”. The self-taught photographer and printmaker spent 10 years journeying into untamed spaces in Singapore, photographing sights hidden to the average local’s eye—places he deemed “untouched by the hand of man”. Every photo produced was taken somewhere on the mainland island, even if their ethereal, other-worldly quality might suggest otherwise.

Pool noodles may seem innocuous, but as one family learned the hard way, these popular pool toys can hide life-threatening secrets. Last summer, the City of Buckeye Fire Department in Arizona warned residents about the potential for snakes hiding out in pool noodles after a family found a bunch of rattlesnakes inside their bendy toys while going for a swim. Luckily, nobody was attacked by the snakes, but there were other young rattlesnakes in the noodles.
