Here's why bold travelers should visit Transnistria, a mysterious land in limbo.
Transnistria is a tiny ‘country’ wedged between Moldova and Ukraine. It declared its independence from Moldova in 1990 and fought a war until 1992. It has its own currency, its own flag and its own government, yet most of the world refuses to recognize it as an independent country. Even so, travel to Transnistria from Moldova is actually pretty simple. [Yes Theory]
In the days leading up to Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, families in Pomuch, Mexico, take their deceased relatives' skeletons out of their tombs for their annual cleaning. The ritual is said to originate with the Mayans, and today, only Catholics here practice it. The pandemic has kept people away from the cemetery for the past two years, and younger generations are unlikely to carry on the tradition for much longer. [Business Insider]
For each of the roughly 30 years between the late 1850s and 1889, a man clad all in leather walked a 360-odd mile circuit through 41 towns of southwestern Connecticut and southeastern New York. He repeated the circuit in a clockwise direction every 34 days or so, averaging 10 miles a day, begging for meals and sleeping in caves along the way. Regionally famous in his day, for more than a century the Leatherman, whose strange appearance was captured in an occasional photograph and in the memories of eyewitnesses, has remained a vivid part of Connecticut lore. [Connecticut Explored]
The Leatherman was a famous wanderer who frequented Connecticut's back roads in the 1800s. He was a mysterious hermit/woodsman who spoke little. He was so tight-lipped not even his name was known. Yet, the people adored this gruff wanderer and his odd accent. On his route, "friends" would regularly feed the stranger whenever he came around. The Leatherman's arrival in town was always so punctual it became a sort of local institution in many towns. [Pseudiom]
Born in Tangier, Morocco, Ibn Battuta came of age in a family of Islamic judges. In 1325, at age 21, he left his homeland for the Middle East. He intended to complete his hajj—the Muslim pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca—but he also wished to study Islamic law along the way. “I set out alone,” he later remembered, “having neither fellow-traveler in whose companionship I might find cheer, nor caravan whose party I might join, but swayed by an overmastering impulse within me and a desire long-cherished in my bosom to visit these illustrious sanctuaries.” [History]
Hashima Island, commonly called Gunkanjima (meaning Battleship Island), is an abandoned island off Nagasaki, lying about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the center of the city. It is one of 505 uninhabited islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The island's most notable features are its abandoned concrete buildings, undisturbed except by nature, and the surrounding sea wall. While the island is a symbol of the rapid industrialization of Japan, it is also a reminder of Japanese war crimes as a site of forced labour prior to and during the Second World War. The Liechtenstein witch trials took place between 1679 and 1682, after a first trial in 1648–1651. The third trial of 1679–1682 is known more in detail than the first.
